ONLINE MEETUP ‘Home Education: Accessing Exams and Qualifications’

Christian Values in Education is pleased to invite you to an online Meet-Up, “Home Education: Accessing Exams and Qualifications”, on Friday, 31st March at 8:00 p.m. with guest speakers Caragh Moore and Andrew Baker.

Coming to terms with the myriad of potential exams and qualifications is one of the challenges for home educators.  It can prove daunting, and often requires a lot of time spent in research.  CViE is pleased to offer you this Meet-Up where so many of your questions can be answered.

Caragh is a PhD scientist with a PGCE, and a mother of home educated children attending prominent universities in various disciplines.  She will share that knowledge and experience enriched by reflection on past learning and adaptation to individual children.  What will be of particular help to CViE supporters are her thoughts on lessons learned as a parent, a teacher and tutor on forming disciples of Christ, and equipping for the challenges of university and the world of work.  She has been involved with co-ops and different styles of learning, and knows what is involved in A-level and university decision-making.

Andrew has a PhD and PGCE, has taught science at GCSE level, and since 2006 has run a tuition centre (St. Ives Tutoring Centre) that guides primary and secondary school students through SATs, GCSEs and entrance exam preparation from state school, private school and home-school backgrounds (with a particular focus on maths and science).  His experience and that of his tutors has led to a sifting of what might be considered to be most useful in preparing students while continually reviewing new resources.

We are very pleased, as well, to introduce you to Ian and Jane Walkington, who are active in a volunteer-run, not-for-profit Christian home-education exam centre.  Started years ago by home-educating parents,  the centre runs Cambridge board iGCSEs and A-levels.  To keep costs low parents are asked to invigilate (or nominate someone on their behalf) the same amount of sessions as their child will need an invigilator for.  Where a parent cannot find a local school who will allow their child to sit an iGCSE, the centre offers substantial savings on private exam centres.
