2019 Abortion Statistics – Do we care enough?
On 11th June this year the Abortion Statistics for 2019 were published by the government. Writing on his website John Ling describes these as ‘the worst statistics ever, ever since the 1967 Abortion Act legalised the procedure‘. He goes on to say ‘What should we think about all this? These figures typically get worse and worse each year, but these are the gravest ever. 4,000 each week, 800 every MTWThF, on your doorstep. Does it matter? Isn’t it just the way things are? Should we care? Doesn’t abortion solve a problem? After all, is it really a real child? Who wanted it anyway? We shame ourselves by such thoughts. They are sub-standard Christian notions. Each little number represents a now lifeless child and a childless mother. What should be the proper Christian response? Pray, educate, engage, care, support. Have you?‘
On this theme a couple of short videos have come to our attention. Whilst aspects of these may not be to everyone’s taste, they are very poignant. How easily we can become hardened to these dreadful statistics and forget just what it is we are talking about.
The first video is from Focus on the Family and is linked to their online SEE LIFE 2020 event on Saturday 26th September. It highlights that each abortion is the ending of the life of a human being who will not now be born.
The second video presents “Numbers” a poem written by Glenn Scrivener during the COVID-19 outbreak to illustrate how we can become immune when listening to statistics about death rates to the fact that they concern people’s lives. Within the poem, he interweaves a comparison with the lives that have been taken by abortion and whether this means anything to us. This video does help to put things into perspective and bring home what a blot abortion is upon the country and indeed the world. We should reflect on what a holy God thinks as he sees each life taken. How needful it is for us to be brought to national repentance. How vital that we each have the courage to stand up for the unborn.
