Time is running out to influence the new Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) guidance. We would urge our supporters to pray about this issue and to contact their MPs. A brief summary is provided below and there is also a dedicated set of resources on the CViE website to help you to keep informed.
As you may be aware, the Government has been driving forward ‘reforms’ to ‘update’ the teaching of sex and relationship education.
This has involved developing new guidance that will replace the Sex and Relationships Education Guidance DfE 2000. The Government’s intention is that the proposed statutory guidance will be implemented across both state and private schools in September 2020.
CViE has been active in contributing to the various consultations relating to the development of the guidance and, in summary, the concerns we identified can be expressed as:
On Monday, 25 February 2019 Damien Hinds (Secretary Of State for Education) laid before the House of Commons the draft statutory guidance ”Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England)”. At the same time, a Statutory Instrument was laid before Parliament that will be scrutinised by the House of Lords and finally approved by the House of Commons.
The passage of the Statutory Instrument may have perhaps been seen by the Department for Education as a foregone conclusion however it is still possible for it to be annulled by either the House of Lords or the House of Commons.
Next week, on Tuesday, 19 March 2019, the House of Lords will be scrutinising the statutory instrument and on Wednesday, 20 March 2019, a motion has been tabled in the main hall of the House of Commons to approve the Draft Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations.
CViE would urge our supporters to earnestly pray that the Lord might overturn the statutory instrument and prevent this attempt to confuse the minds of children and young people through teaching behaviours and practices that are contrary to the Word of God.
Also, if individuals feel able, then please express your concerns over the proposed regulations to your MP. Contact details of your MP can be found by clicking here.
We believe the chief concerns to be very much the erosion of parental responsibility for the education of their children and the promotion of views that undermine Christian values and beliefs.
CViE have a dedicated Sex and Relationship (RSE) webpage that provides a background to the current situation and why we should be concerned. These webpages have been produced as a resource for anyone wishing a better understanding of the issues involved.
Please visit the webpage RSE-why should we be concerned? and take the opportunity to read the section “Why should I be concerned?”. This provides more detailed arguments that may well help inform writing to your MP.
We are exhorted to call upon the Lord “in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me”. (Psalm 50:15) This is a day of trouble; might the Lord hear our prayers and deliver us from the enemies of the truth of the Scriptures and of the Lord Jesus Christ.
